Sugar is a sweet-tasting, crystalline carbohydrate that is commonly used as a sweetener in various food and beverage products. It is one of the most widely consumed food ingredients worldwide. The scientific name for sugar is sucrose, and its chemical formula is C12H22O11.
There are two primary sources of sugar:
- Cane Sugar: Cane sugar is derived from sugar cane, a tall tropical grass widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The sugar is extracted from the sugarcane stalks by crushing them to release the juice, which is then processed to produce sugar crystals. Cane sugar is available in various forms, including raw sugar, brown sugar, and refined white sugar.
- Beet Sugar: Beet sugar is derived from sugar beets, which are root vegetables. The sugar is extracted from the sugar beet through a process that involves slicing the beets and extracting the sugar from the beet slices. Beet sugar is chemically identical to cane sugar and is also available in various forms. Sugar is an essential ingredient in the food industry and is used in the preparation of various food products, such as desserts, baked goods, beverages, candies, and many other processed foods. It provides a sweet taste and acts as a natural preservative in some food products.
